John and his wife Martha moved to the Chickasaw Nation in Indian Territory near Ardmore In the 1890's, John taught school for a time and was a guard for the first Federal jail in Ardmore when it was only a stockade. He worked under Marshall John S. Hammer and for a while William Theodore and Thaddeus Lincoln McCallie, his sons, were deputies under Marshall Hammer and are mentioned in a book written by Elmer Leroy Baker a biography for James Robert (Bob) hutchins U.S. Deputy Marshal., "Note" Elmer Leroy Baker was the grandson of John Henry & Martha McCallie and the son of Thomas Kelly Baker & Maude Mitchell McCallie Baker.


John Henry McCallie was enrolled on January 14,1864 at Calhoun, Tennessee in Company C. 19 Regiment of Tenn. Cavalry Volunteers to serve three years or " During the War " and mustered into the War as a recruit on the 29th day of January 1864 at Nashville, in Company C, 10th regiment of Tenn. Cavalry. He became a bugler in early 1865 and was mustered out August 1,1865.

John Henry died of pneumonia on Sunday January 15, 1899 at his home two miles southeast of Hewitt, Indian Territory in Oklahoma, and was buried Tuesday the 17th., My to be grandmother Ida Belle Grissom was 17yrs old at the time and remembered the precession passing her house going to the cemetery., She lived down the road from the McCallie's.

Sometime in 1907 statehood for Oklahoma , The family moved to the Weleetka,Oklahoma area. where many McCallie's are buried including John's wife Martha and other family members.
