Lee Wayne Russ, 48, was a resident of Monahans since 1979. He was a deputy sheriff for Ward County. Deputy Russ was killed in the line of duty while trying to save a woman's life during a domestic dispute. Graveside services were held at Monahans Memorial Cemetery with presentations from the Midland Police Department’s Color Guard and the Odessa Police Department’s Honor Guard.

Survivors include sons, Jason Russ, Benjamin Russ, and daughter, Miranda Russ, all of Monahans; parents, Carl Russ, Josephine Russ Janeck and Joseph Janeck, all of El Paso; brother, Jack Russ of El Paso, and sisters, Patricia Templeton-Fox and Connie Buchanan, both of Austin, and five nephews.
