William Fahnestock
William Fahnestock was born February 19, 1821 in Everett, Providence Twp. Bedford County, PA. He was the son of Adam Ridenbaugh. He was apprenticed to the printing busines at an eary age, and learned the trade thoroughly, In 1843 he came to Liberty Missouri and engaged in the publication of a paper at that place. In the spring of 1845 he came to St. Joseph, Buchanan County Missouri, and issued the first number of the first paper ever published in the city- the St.Joseph Weekly Gazette, moving his printing office from Liberty for that purpose.In August 1852, he sold the office to Charles F.Holly, of Savannah, who subsequently sold an interest in it to Gen. L. J. Eastin, and then bought it back again, and finally, on the 11th of October, 1854, sold the office to Pfouts & Cundiff, who continued the publication of the paper untilthe breaking out of the rebellion. On the 28th of June, 1868, the publication of the paper was resumed by Mr. Wm. F. Ridenbaugh, Col. Cundiff, and Peter Nugent, who continue to publish it until 1872, when the interest of the former was disposed of to his son. In August 1852, Mr. Wm F. Ridenbaugh was elected to the office of Clerk of the Circuit Court, a position he held for twelve years.In November 1870, he was re-elected to the same position, which he continued to hold to the time of his death. He was also at one time the Judge of the County Court for a brief period, and served as member of the City Council for two years. He was for years Chairman of the Democratic Central Committee and always took par in the management of every political campaign. He was twice a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions. He was for many years a Director of the Northwestern Fair Association. He was instrumental in the lay out of Wathena,in the spring of 1856, along with M.E. Bryan and P. Morse. They bought the land from a Mr. Cox for $750 in gold. Mr. Wm. F. Ridenbaugh married Miss Hannah Creal in 1846, she died in 1866 leavinf six children; Vernon Lewis b. 1848 d.1887, Mary F. b. 1850, Married Samuel Smithd. 1931, Willliam Henry, b. 1856 married Mary E. Black moved to Boise Idaho, d. 1922, Annie Creal, b. 1858 married Joseph T. Bird, moved to Kansas d. 1937, Nellie Belle, b. 1862 d. 1893, John Frederic, married Lucille d. 1935 in Idaho. In 1879 Mr. Wm. F. Ridenbaugh married Mrs. Mary Baker, who had two children from her previous marriage, she was the daughter of Major George Young, and the granddaughter of Gov. Shelby , first Governor of Kentucky. The issue of this marriage was one son named George Young Ridenbaugh. Mr. Wm F. Ridenbaugh died October 18, 1874.
