Robert B. Fancher, 89, of Gering, died Sunday morning, May 11, 2008, at Heritage Estates in Gering.

His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, May 15, at Gering Memorial Chapel with Fr. Kelsey Hogue, Robert Manasek and Karen Anderson officiating, Interment will follow at West Lawn Cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday May 14, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to the St. Frances Episcopal Church, Prairie Haven Hospice, the Alzheimer's Unit at Heritage Estates or dononr's choice. Tributes of sympathy may be left at www.geringchapel.com.

Bob was born on Sept. 28, 1918, in Wheatland, Wyo., to Arthur B. and Ruth (Mitchell) Fancher. He attended school in Long Beach, Calif., and graduated from Wheatland High School. He entered the U.S. Navy on May 5, 1944, and served during WWII on the USS McConnell and USS Canfield and was honorable discharge on Dec. 22, 1945. He was united in marriage to Mary Leah Armstrong on Aug.12, 1947, in Gering.

Bob started as a manager of the Goshen Hole Lumber Co in Yoder, Wyo., from 1939-1942. He moved to Wheatland and, after returning from the Navy, became the first manager of Inter-City Lumbar Co in Gering. He was a Bloedorn Lumber Company Supervisor, President, CEO, and Director over his seventy some years in the company. Today there are over 21 lumberyards in four states.


He was an Honorary Life Member of the Mt. States Lumber Association, National Lumber Dealers Association. He was 50+ year member of the Scotts Bluff #201 AF & AM Masonic Lodge, VWF, American Legion, Chairman of the Community Chest, Lions Club, Past Member of the City Council and Chamber Commerce, Director of Farmers State Bank in Ft. Morgan and Gering National of Gering and Chairman of Oregon Trail Days and associated with the event for many years. He was a member of St. Frances Episcopal Church (formerly St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Gering).

Bob received many awards, Prestigious Aksarben in 1972, Scottsbluff United Chairman Trail Blazer Award in 1972, and City of Gering Trail Boss Award in 1968.

He enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting and playing cards with the guys.

Survivors include his daughter, Julie Fancher of Scottsbluff; brothers, George Fancher and his family of Loveland, Colo., and Don and wife Shirley Jean Fancher and their family of Denver; sister-in-law, Kathryn Smith of Kelso, Wash., and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary on February 1, 2002; two young sisters; sister-in-law, Jean Fancher; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Harry Armstrong, Frank and Dolly Armstrong, Louis Smith and Louis Armstrong.
