Harold E. Smith 63, of Springfield, formerly of Virden, died at 3:10 p.m. Monday at Memorial Medical Center, Springfield.

He was born April 18, 1924, in Girard, the son of William and Essie Tunnell Smith. He was a member of the Girard Baptist Church, a veteran of World War II, a member of the American Legion Post No. 386 of Virden and a member of the AARP. He retired in 1972 from Fiatallis.

He married Rosella Ishmael Dec. 19, 1942.

Surviving are his wife, Rosella; one son, Ron (Jackie)Smith of Springfield; two daughters, Barbara (Delmar)George of Divernon and Helen Smith of Springfield; six grandchildren Robert Smith, Jill Smith, Cindy Johnson, William George, Danny Bess and Juanita Dyer; and one great-grandchild William George Jr.

He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter Judy Bess Dyer.

Berry Funeral Home, Virden, is in charge of arrangements and burial in Virden Cemetery, Virden Illinois.
