He was born April 18, 1924, in Girard, the son of William and Essie Tunnell Smith. He was a member of the Girard Baptist Church, a veteran of World War II, a member of the American Legion Post No. 386 of Virden and a member of the AARP. He retired in 1972 from Fiatallis.
He married Rosella Ishmael Dec. 19, 1942.
Surviving are his wife, Rosella; one son, Ron (Jackie)Smith of Springfield; two daughters, Barbara (Delmar)George of Divernon and Helen Smith of Springfield; six grandchildren Robert Smith, Jill Smith, Cindy Johnson, William George, Danny Bess and Juanita Dyer; and one great-grandchild William George Jr.
He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter Judy Bess Dyer.
