Obiturary:
John N. Norris was born in Holmes County, Ohio March 24, 1837. He died on July 16, 1907, age 70 years, 3 months, 22 days. his life has been spent mainly in Brooklyn. As a pioneer, it has been his privilege to see the country grow up to its present beauty. In September 1861 when it was necessary to defend our country, he responded to call and enlisted as a Pvt. in Co. E., 4th Regiment Iowa Calvary and served until August 1865. to him were born 14 children, 3 having preceded him to the other world. He leaves behing his present companion and 11 children to mourn his loss. By the request of friends and relatives his favoirte hymn was sung, "Give Me The Bible". The funeral services were held in the Christian Church. S. B. Grisso, of the Bretheren Church preached the service, assisted by Rev. Epler. Mr. Norris was a member of the Brethren Church.
John was in the 4th Iowa Calvary in the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865. He was blinded by sand at the Battle of Vicksburg, Mi. He re-enlisted as a Wagoner and continued to serve until he was discharged at the end of the war at Atlanta. He received a blind pension of $5.00 per month.
All of his married life was spent in Powsheik County, Iowa except for 5 years in Labette County, Kansas. Possibly Chilicothe, Mo. He had a mail route to deliver the mail from Montezuma to Ewart. Alcinda drove the buggy. He died at the dinner table at his daughter Flora's home in Brooklyn.
