James Andrew Dyer was born 26 April 1845 to parents Anderson T. and Rachel (Hubbs) Dyer. Sadly, Anderson died 8 months prior to his son's birth when he fell from a horse. James' mother remarried when James was a toddler and hw was often known by his step-father's name, Damewood.

James, and his brother Marion, enlisted to fight in the Civil War. James was a private, in Company A, 1st Tennessee Infantry USA.

After the war, James married Mary Shaver, daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth McAnaly Shaver, in 1866 and began farming in Union County. James and Mary had seven children, four survived to adulthood: John, Rachel, Andrew and Arthur.

James was a member of the Baptist Church and is buried at the Clear Branch Baptist Church in Luttrell, TN.
