After graduating from Oregon State, Lote began his career in the insurance industry with the Oregon Fire Insurance Rating Bureau. He then joined the USF&G Insurance Company and when he retired he was the Branch Manager of the Portland, Oregon office.
His first wife was Izma, his sweetheart from Oregon State. After she passed away, he married Jean, who also had worked at USF&G for many years.
