Rachel M. Davis married John Moorehead Scott on September 24, 1861, in Findlay, Ohio, just after he joined the 21st Ohio Volunteer Infantry, being mustered in at the age of 22 on September 19, 1861. Scott became a Sergeant in Company F. He was one of 24 men who volunteered to take part in what became known as the "Andrews' Raid" or the "Great Locomotive Chase" on April 12, 1862. He was captured and was among the 7 men who were hanged at Atlanta by the Confederates, leaving Rachel a young widow. She qualified for a pension, then married again to Waggoner.
