Son of Elisha and Fidelia Hicks Hedges and husband of Emma Jean Dieter Hedges, Frank Leslie Hedges is buried in the IOOF Cemetery (now called Cloverdale) near Turner, Oregon.
Frank was born in Rockford, Illinois, but his parents only lived there for a couple of years before going back to the Buffalo, New York area. After living in New York while Frank and his older brothers Will and Charlie became educated, the parents soon began making their move west.
Frank married Emma Jean Dieter on 7 Oct 1885 in Park River, Pembina Co, North Dakota (in a double ring ceremony). Emma Jean's parents Martin and Catherine Keegan Dieter were neighbors in Pembina Co.
Several of the Dieter and Hedges families were soon on the move again, this time to northern Minnesota in 1888. Dieter Township in Kittson Co. was named for Martin Dieter. The family members and neighbors built a new schoolhouse where Emma Jean was the teacher.
Emma and Frank became parents of Irving Victor and Earl Edwin born in Minnesota. The Hedges and Dieters lived there for about 10 years before heading back to North Dakota, where they settled at deserted Ft. Buford which was open to homesteaders.
Many family members traveled by covered wagon from Kittson Co. Minnesota all the way through North Dakota. At that time Emma Jean was carrying her third child, Lillian Esther who was born shortly after settling at deserted Ft. Buford.
Emma Jean and her small sons Irving and Earl and others walked along in front of the wagon to remove rocks that could have caused damage to the wagons. Ten years later Ellen Edith Cecil Hedges was born at Ft. Buford, her grandmother Kate Dieter being the midwife.
Frank and Emma Jean later homesteaded in the Antelope Plentywood area near Mondak, where their daughters got their education and their older brothers bought homesteads.
Frank and Martin Dieter again were on the school board. Frank was a rancher in Montana and Emma's father Martin was a farmer.
In 1929 the family moved to Salem where they made their permanent home until their deaths.
