"Percy Padgett Killed."
"Mother Risks Her Life to Recover the Son's Body."
"Percy Padgett, the 18-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Padgett of west of Spearville lost his life last Saturday in a well on the Padgett farm. While working at blasting in the well a younger son was lowered to the bottom where he was overcome by gases. Percy was hurriedly lowered by his father and fastened the rope to the unconscious boy. When the two had been drawn half way to the top of the well. Percy was either overcome by the gas or lost his hold and fell to the bottom. There was only one way to get the unfortunate boy out of the well without waiting to secure help. That was for the mother to be lowered into the well as she was not strong enough to lower the father and raise him and the son to the top. The mother proved equal to the emergency. She was lowered to the bottom and in the darkness there fastened the rope about the shoulders of the son and reached the ground above again only just in time to be caught from falling. An instant time lost in getting her to the top would have resulted in her too losing her life. The son had a bad gash cut in his head and was dead. The younger son after several hours recovered consciousness and it was found that he had suffered no serious injury."

Percy Charles Padgett was born on November 2, 1887, in Spearville. He was the oldest of eight children born to Guy and Alice Stonehouse Padgett. Guy and Alice left Iowa and settled in Ford County in 1880. About 1910, the family was living in California, where Guy passed away in 1934 and Alice in 1958.
