Doris C. (Dori) Burns, 81, of Fort Dodge, died Tuesday, April 6, 2010 at her home.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday, April 9 in the Chapel of Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home and 10:30 a.m. at Corpus Christi Church with Msgr. Kevin McCoy and the Rev. Lynn Bruch concelebrating at the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be in Jefferson Cemetery, Jefferson, Iowa. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, where there will be a Catholic Daughters of the Americas Rosary at 4:30 p.m.
Surviving is her daughter, Tami Anderson (Marc McCulloch) of Fort Dodge; son, Douglas Smith (Heather) of Fort Dodge; stepsons, Robert Burns Jr. (Ann) of Edina, Minn., John Burns (Sue) of Norfolk, Neb., Larry Burns (Marlene) of Grand Island, Neb.; 11 grandchildren, Erika Anderson, Valerie Anderson, McKenzie Smith, Zach Smith, Ty Smith, Adam Burns, Kevin Burns, Bridget Burns, Katie Burns, Nikki Burns, Paul Burns; several great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Guy and Valeria (Haley) Groves; her husband, Robert J. Burns; a sister, Alice L. Christensen; and a granddaughter and great-grandson.
Doris C. Groves was born April 2, 1929 in Yankton, S.D. Dori was raised and educated in Jefferson, Iowa and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1947. She then continued her education at Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Des Moines, graduating in 1950 as a Registered Nurse. She worked in Des Moines until 1957. On Sept. 13, 1957 she was united in marriage to Roy V. Smith in Nevada, Iowa. They established their home in Newton until relocating to Fort Dodge in 1961. They later divorced in 1981. Dori worked for the Fort Dodge Villa Care Center for a number of years as the Director of Nursing, and then was promoted to the Administrator until retiring in 1990. On Nov. 24, 1990, Dori was united in marriage to Dr. Robert Burns at Corpus Christi Church. They lived in Nebraska for 6 years until returning to Fort Dodge in 1996. Together they enjoyed their winters in Texas. Dori was a member of Holy Trinity Parish, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, was an avid bridge player and a huge Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeye fan.
Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
