Mrs. C.M. Goodwin Died Here Friday After Long Illness

Death closed the book of life Saturday afternoon on Mrs. Carolyn Malvina Goodwin, 95, and one of Archer City's most beloved pioneer women. The end came at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Nannie Bray, with whom she had made her home for the past several years. The aged woman had been in ill health the past few years.

A native Texan, the deceased was born March 6, 1855, at Midlothian, Ellis County, Texas. For the past several years, Mrs. Goodwin was said to be the oldest native Texan living in Archer City. She had lived in the county 55 years.

As Carolyn Hendricks, she was married to E.J. Goodwin on January 16, 1871 at Midlothian and moved with him and their children to Archer County in 1888 settling on Lake Creek in northeast Archer. In 1897 the family moved to Archer City where they made their home until 1903 and then moved to Oklahoma where they lived until returning to Archer City in 1910.

A total of 15 children were born to the couple, 11 of whom survive and all were present for the funeral save a son, Chester A. Goodwin, of Eagle Pass, Texas.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock at the Church of Christ in this city, with C.E. Wilson, minister, of Abilene, officiating. She had been a member of the Church of Christ since a girl of 15. Burial was in the Archer City cemetery under direction of Owens & Brumley Funeral Home of Wichita Falls.

Pallbearers were six grandsons, B.D. Robertson and Bill Robertson of Archer City; W.W. (Mutt) Robertson of Wichita Falls; Garrie Bray and John Malone Jr. of Austin; and Charles Powell of Amarillo.

Survivors are six daughters, Mrs. Margaret Robertson of Wichita Falls; Mrs. Nannie Bray, Mrs. Lillian Forgy, Mrs. Bertha Young, and Mrs. Mary Malone all of Archer City; and Mrs. Belle Sumner of Rush Springs OK; and five sons, C.E. Goodwin and J.J. Goodwin of Archer City; S.H. Goodwin of Claremore OK; C.A. Goodwin of Eagle Pass TX; and J.P. Goodwin of Austin.
