Robert served in the Civil War from October 31, 1861 until November 25, 1864. He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg with the NY 40th. Then onto the Battle at Spotsylvania, Va. where he was wounded. He was captured at Spotsylvania and transported over 700 miles to Andersonville Prison in Georgia where he was for seven months. When the war ended he returned home to New York to his wife and family. He died in 1886 of heart problems caused by being shot in the chest during the war.
