James Merrill Coleman was son of Absalom Coleman and Nancy Lillard Coleman, grandson of Private Spencer Coleman and Colonel William Lillard, Revolutionary War veterans. To the union of James Merrill and Mary Hughes Coleman were born:

Mary Hughes Coleman died in 1870, giving birth to Ellen Missouri. Ellen Missouri was raised until she was eleven by "Old Auntie" Coleman, a former slave who stayed with the family after the Civil War. Ellen Missouri married James Russell Palmer, Fort Worth, TX, whose daughter Gena Odessa married Thomas Jesse Kemp, Sweetwater, TX, son of Thomas Lafayette Kemp.
