James Cunningham South, D.C., returned to his Heavenly Father Saturday, March 27, 2010. He was 88 years old. Dr. South was born Feb. 24, 1922, to Wilson and Leona Mae (Hall) South of Chelsea, Okla. On Jan. 19, 1946, he married Dolores Queen in Norfolk, Va.

Dr. South was a chiropractor in Ottawa since coming here in 1960. He was a graduate of the Cleveland Chiropractic College in Overland Park and was a member of the Kansas Chiropractic Association, receiving a 50 year service award from the association. He loved his work and found great joy in helping to relieve the pain of others.

As a Cherokee Indian, love of his country and patriotism was important to James. He served in the Navy from 1942 to 1946. As a Naval Aviator he was a member of the VBF-10 Corsair Bomber and Fighter Pilot Squadron stationed aboard the USS Intrepid in the Pacific Theater. He made the 9,000th landing on the USS Intrepid while serving in this duty station. He attained the rank of Lt. JG during his service.

James was an accomplished boxer during his younger days winning the 1941 Golden Gloves Award for the lightweight division while representing the Argentine Parrish House of Kansas City. During his later years he was a coach for the Ottawa Boxing Club, helping to shape the lives of many young people.

Active in the Ottawa community, James was also a member of the Masons, Abdallah Shrine Temple, Elks Lodge and the American Legion.

James is survived by his wife Dolores Queen South of the Home; a daughter, Shelley Sink, Ottawa, Kan.; a son, Christopher South and his wife Beth, Dallas, Texas; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

James was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Barton South; three sisters, Maxine Einhellig, Geraldine House and Leona Mae Wright and one brother, Bill South.

Services were held at 10:30 Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at First United Methodist Church of Ottawa with burial in the Highland Cemetery.
