Henry served in the U.S. Army from 1914 (1 April) to 1919 and in the U.S. Navy in the early 1920s. While in the U.S. Army Henry served in the Hospital Corps at Fort Bayard, New Mexico and the 326th Labor Battalion in France during WWI. He was discharged from the Army on 18 July 1919. From 2 September 1919 to 1 September 1922, he served as a Machinist Mate in the U.S. Navy aboard the following ships:
