John William and Elizabeth Minger Brown

John William Hugh Gibbons Brown b. 5 April 1856 to Thomas Henry and Sarah Patrick Brown in a log house near Hunter school in Millville Twp., Turker River, Ia., Clayton Co., (See page 1011 Clayton Co. History 1882). When he was a young child his parents took him back to England, their native country, to be educated. He attended schools in England and France, then returned to the USA in Clayton Co. in 1871.

John William married Elizabeth Caroline Minger 8 May 1879 in Cassville, Wis. Elizabeth Minger b. 19 Dec. 1857 to Johannes and Elizabeth Hassig Minger at Turkey River, Ia., and received her education in rural schools. They farmed the land that had been owned by his parents, Thomas H. and Sarah Brown Sec. 11 in Millville Twp., Turkey River, Ia., and lived the rest of their lives on this farm, known as the J. W. Brown Estate.

They were parents of seven children: Herbert Brown b. 29 March 1880, died an infant. Edith E. (Nellie) m. C. Grant White. John Henry b. 14 Dec. 1882, d. 31 Aug. 1885 of scarlet fever. Charles Edward b. 28 Feb. 1884, m. 26 Feb. 1907 to Pearl J. Heckel, d. 18 April 1952. They are parents of five children: Russell, Edith, William, Ruth and Beulah Mae. George Irving b. 4 Dec. 1885, m. 29 July 1914 to Lucy A. Lange, d. 14 Nov. 1971. They are parents of two children, John lives in Guttenberg, and Rita. Bertha Ada m. to John F. Moser. Arthur Ellison m. Pearl Troester.

John W. Brown d. 3 Oct. 1901 and Elizabeth d. 28 Feb. 1944. They are buried at the Goshen Cemetery, Millville Twp. They were members of the Goshen United Brethren Church. They were hard working people and are remembered for the many kind deeds done for others.
