Council Bluffs Man Is Killed; 3 Others Hurt When Car Hits Bank
George Atwell Rohrig, 33, of Council Bluffs, was killed instantly Saturday night when the car in which he was riding overshot highway 20 and ran into a bank two miles west of Schaller. Three other persons, including Wayne Osten, 26, of Carroll [driver of the car]; Jim R. Wilson of Council Bluffs and Mrs. Consuelo Shelton of Council Bluffs, were injured in the accident, and have been brought to the St Anthony hospital in Carroll.
The accident occurred about 10 p.m. Saturday night while the three men, who are students at a welding school in Lake View, were enroute to Storm Lake on a fishing trip. Mrs. Shelton who is employed in Lake View was accompanying them to Storm Lake to take a train for her home in Council Bluffs.
Officers reported that the car slid 118 feet after the brakes had been applied and before it crashed into the bank hurling Rohrig through the windshield. Rohrig suffered a broken neck.
