Grace L. Bushong, 84, Redfield, Spink Co., South Dakota, died Wednesday July 1, 1987 at the Redfield Community Hospital.

Grace was born January 7, 1903 at Britton to Rev. William D. & Charlotte A. (Puddle) Deeble. She attended various schools and Dakota Wesleyan University at Mitchell.

She married Hubert W. Bushong, son of Samuel & Annie (Bartlett) Bushong, in Mitchell on September 14, 1922. They lived on a farm in Burdette Twp., Hand Co., SD, which was part of Hubert's father's original homestead. *Their postal address was "Tulare", a town across the county line into Spink Co*. Following Hubert's death in 1977, Grace moved to Redfield.

She was a member of the Wheaton United Church of Christ, Zell, the Order of Eastern Star of Tulare, where she was secretary for 35 years.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Delbert & Donna (Sisson) Bushong of Tulare; five grandchidren and ten great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, daughter Helen (Bushong) Bussell; two brothers, Albert L. and Clarence W. Deeble.

Funeral: Monday, at First Congregational Church, Redfield.
Officiating: Rev. Paul Opsahl.
Burial: Burdette Cemetery.
Arrangements: Coleman Funeral Home, Redfield.

Grace's parents were both born in England. On the 1910 Census, Grace, her two brothers, and parents were in Highmore, Hyde Co., SD. It showed her mother as having had 6 children but only 3 living, and the 3 living were all born in SD. With her father being a minister, we find the family living in various counties, including Marshall & Brown.

Grace's mother's name my be "Charlott A." or "Charlotte A.", with maiden as "Puddle" or "Buddle", (with marriage as 1887, and being born in Gloucestershire, England). The SD State Census for 1915 has Buddle, but a SD birth record has her maiden name as Puddle. Graces brother Clarence is the only family member found to date on FAG. An online family tree has a Charlotte A. (Puddle) b. abt. 1858 in Gloucestershire, England, with parents Richard & Martha M. Puddle. No husband shown.

SD Death Index shows that Grace's mother, Charlotte died October 22, 1917 in Brown Co. SD. SD Marriages shows her father, W.D. remarried in Haakon Co., SD June 26, 1919. He was living in Kimball, Brule Co., and his bride, Dosia E. (Bretz) in Ottumwa, Haakon Co,. He was "widowed", she "maiden". CALIF. Deaths show Dosia born in Michigan, Oct. 6, 1861, mother's maiden name Bear" & father's surname as "Bretz). She died Dec. 23, 1951 in Los Angeles Co. No record found matching known information regarding W.D. or William D. Deeble as to death and/or burial location.

Grace's brother, Albert L. Deeble was a dentist. He died Aug. 25, 1952 in Day Co., SD.

GROTON NEWS: Mrs. W.D. Deeble, widow of the late Rev. W.D. Deeble, a former pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church of this city, has been here for weeks as a guest of friends.
