James Riley Wiseman, born in rural Missouri, married Julia Ann Gum when he was 20 years old. He was a farmer and a blacksmith.

In 1882, he, his wife and seven children headed out for the Willamette Valley of Oregon. He was a captain of the wagon train, indicating he had excellent leadership qualities. His daughter, Sarah, left a journal detailing the trip across the country.

James and Julia had four more children in Oregon before Julia died in 1891.

James married again in 1894 to Martha Walker England. With her, he moved back and forth to Idaho, having two children in Oregon and two children in Idaho.

On 17 Feb 1921, in Webb City, Jasper County, MO, James married Martha Jane Gum Clifton who had already outlived three husbands, and was the sister of James' first wife, Julia. Together they made their home in Chico, California. One of Martha's children, Charles M. Archer, lived there too, and perhaps that is why they moved there. James died in 1927.
