Mrs. Estelene Sloan of the Hiwassie Community and a longtime resident of Pleasant Shade died at 8:56 a.m. Wednesday morning February 10, 2016 at the Quality Care Health Center where she was originally transferred to on May 23, 2011 suffering from heart failure. Mrs. Sloan was 101.

Her pastor, Eld. Charles Allen Gentry, officiated at the 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon February 14th funeral services from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home. Burial was beside her husband in the Pleasant Shade Cemetery.

One of five daughters of the late Jasper Daniel Sircy who died June 12, 1924 at the age of 61 and Nettie Wilson Kemp Sircy who died November 25, 1971 at the age of 90, she was born Virginia Estelene Sircy in the Difficult Community on January 18, 1915.

Mrs. Sloan was preceded in death by two sisters, Virgie Sircy Armistead and Irene Sircy Carter.

Mrs. Sloan was united in marriage to Pleasant Shade native Clyde Vernon Sloan on December 21, 1934 and he preceded her in death on October 23, 1981 at the age of 73 following almost forty seven years of marriage.

A longtime employee of the former Carthage Shirt Corporation, she later worked as a greeter at Wal-Mart and as a sitter for older people.

Mrs. Sloan also served as a volunteer at the former Carthage General Hospital.

Mrs. Sloan was also a longtime member of the former Pleasant Shade Home Demonstration Club.

She was a longtime member of the Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church and transferred her membership by letter to the North Carthage Baptist Church where she faithfully attended as long as her health permitted.

Surviving is her son, Danny Sloan and wife Alice Caplenor Sloan of the Rome Community, a daughter, Linda Sloan Chappelle of Miami, Florida; two sisters, Mildred Sircy Stanley and husband George of Goodletsville, Goldna Sircy Clay of Carthage; two grandchildren who reside locally, Elizabeth Sloan Pettross and husband Lee of Hiwassie, Daniel Sloan and wife Ashlie also of Hiwassie; five other grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

The Sloan family requests memorials to either the Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church, the Pleasant Shae Cemetery mowing fund or the North Carthage Baptist Church.
