Col. Hardy Murfree enlisted in the 2nd Regt. North Carolina cont. Troops and was commissioned Captain, Sept. 1, 1775, a Major on February 1, 1777 and Lt. Col. 1778-82 (Wheeler's Sketches of North Carolina, Vol. ii p. 208)

He came to Williamson County, Tn 1828.

Hardy Murfree for whom Murfreesboro, TN is named , served in the Continental Army . He fought in many engagements, including Brandywine, Germantown, and Monmouth. At Stony Point he played a key role in defeating the British.
One of Hilliard's daughters, Sally married George W. Polk of Maury County, TN whose home was Rattle and Snap on Mt. Pleasant Pie. When Mrs. Hillard died, she was buried in St. John's Churchyard with the Polks. Isaac was buried near Burwood, TN with his father-In-Law Col. Hardy Murfree.
His tombstone reads "In War the Soldier, In Peace the Citizen. Reverent to God. Respectful to Man."
