Hannah McGreenery was born in Ireland about 1855. Her parents were John McGreenery and Catherine McCall. She arrived in the port of New York on May 27, 1870 having traveled as a steerage passenger on a voyage originating from Glasgow, Scotland. She made her way north to Boston and found work as a servant for a family living on Pinckney Street in Beacon Hill. She married William Mattie on April 30, 1882 at Saint James Church in Boston, Massachusetts.
Hannah McGreenery and William Mattie had five children:
• William Henry Mattie, 1883-1948
• Frederick Joseph Mattie, 1884-1960
• May Frances Mattie, 1886 - 1969
• John Mattie, 1888-1888
• Rose E. Mattie, 1890-1938
