John was residing in Manchester NH by 1860. He and "Lizzie" Dow were married in that city on June 10, 1869. About 1874 the young family moved into a house John had built on Forest Street in Lawrence MA.
John appears to have been very adept at careers and was quite successful. A carpenter who built his own home in his early years, he then adverted in Lawrence Directories as a " manufacturer of Inks, Harness Soap, Blacking, etc", under several names, including "Scollay & Poor" (with Luke Poor, a cousin-in-law), and "Scollay & Rich", all located at his Forest Street home.
By 1898 his career had moved to offices on Essex Street and advertised as "J. P. Scollay & Son" and "John P. Scollay & Son". They supplied the services of: real estate, insurance, collections, loans, mortgages, auctioneer, Notary and Justice of the Peace. The son mentioned here was Arthur.
Around 1901 the family moved to Forest Street in Methuen MA. In 1903 his wife Lizzie died of tuberculosis. John remarried in Peabody MA on Sept. 21, 1905 to widow Helen M . (Sears) Clark, the daughter of Elbridge Sears and Lydia A. Vaugn, all of Plymouth county, MA. Helen had been a dressmaker in Lawrence. After about five years the couple separated.
John died in Jan. 1912 at Lawrence General Hospital of heart problems. He had been there for several weeks.
John was supposedly born in Waltham MA. There are several different versions of his parents. His early life is unclear.
