Fred Gardner, the last member of an early pioneer family of Cedar county, passed away at Mercy hospital in Cedar Rapids Wednesday, October 20, at the age of 66 years, 5 months and 12 days. Pneumonia caused his death.

He was born May 8, 1877, in Cedar county, the youngest son in the family of Esther Heth Gardner and Samuel H. Gardner. He was educated in rural schools in Cedar county.

On November 15, 1903, he was united in marriage to Martha Behrend, and to this union were born four daughters and one son.

For many years Mr. Gardner farmed in Aurora county, South Dakota, and in Jones and Cedar counties in Iowa. The past two years the family home was in Lisbon.

He is survived by his wife and his five children: Mrs. Willis McGuire of Stanwood, Elsie at home, Mrs. Marvin LaFever of Waco, Texas, Lt. Clarence Gardner of the United State Marine Corps at San Diego, Calif., and Mrs. Elmer Dahn of Lisbon. There are also five grandchildren and many relatives and friends who mourn his passing.

Funeral services, in charge of Rev. Albert Fadenrecht, were held Sunday afternoon in the Federated church at Lisbon. Burial was in the Stanwood cemetery.
