Walter C. Bates of Carleton was born near Troy, NY on January 17, 1842 and was the youngest of seven children born to Theordore & Margaret Simmons Bates. He was married to Margaret A. Murphy and they had four children, all of whom are still living. His wife died a few days after they arrived at Carleton, in 1879. In 1880, he married Mary Keim Folk of near Bruning. Four children were born to this union.
He was a member of the A.O.U.W. and G.A.R. Post and a member of Gavel Lodge 199, Ancient Free and Accepted Masonry.
His wife passed away about a month ago. His surviving children are:
Mrs. Stella Booth of Ft. Worth, TX; Mrs. Francis Comer of Oklahoma City, OK; Mrs. Mamie Smith of Blanca, CO; Frank of Hastings; Arthur C. of Davenport; Harvey T. and Walter J of Carleton.
