She was the youngest of 15 children born to Henry Bilton and Roma Chambers Burgess. She raised 6 children, 4 grandchildren, anda 5th grandchild for ashort time. She had 27 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. As a teenager, with the help of her brother and their mother, she started a church known as Bias Branch Freewill Baptist Church in Bias Branch, WV. She was also an Advocate for People Assisting Victims and helped get it going all over the state of North Carolina.
