Joseph J. Roberts was born 1834 in South Carolina, Joseph was the son of William & Martha Roberts. Joseph's parents left S. C. and settled in Nanafalia, Marengo County Alabama, where they joined the Nanafalia Baptist church in 1835, when Joseph was about age one.

Joseph J. Roberts spent his childhood years in Marengo Co., Al., he joined the Nanafalia Baptist church September 1853.

Joseph Roberts and Sarah T. Smith were married on the 24 December 1857 in Marengo Co., Al. they were the parents of two daughters:
Susan Roberts born 1859 born in Marengo County Alabama
Martha Louisa Roberts born 1862 born in Marengo Co., Al.

On July 2, 1860 Joseph J. Roberts purchased 240 acres of land in Marengo County, Alabama. His two brothers James & William purchased land on the same day, the 3 brothers purchased a total of about 640 acres. "Young men making preparations to become planters and their future."

Joseph J. Roberts brother William Roberts born 1836 in Al., enlisted in Co.E, 32nd Al. Infantry, he died April 26, 1863 in the Breckenridge Hospital in Murfreesboro.

Joseph also enlisted in Co. E, 32nd Al. Infantry on the 3rd April 1862, he died the 17 Jan. 1863, two weeks after the battle in Murfreesboro, Tn.

They were both buried in the Confederate Maplewood Cemetery, Tullahoma, Coffee County, Tennessee.

Their brother and the third son of William and Martha Roberts, James Thomas Roberts, also died in the Civil War. His burial site has never been found and at this time is considered to be an unmarked grave on a battlefield in Tennessee.
