GERMAN PIONEER PASSES AWAY
Funeral services were conducted on Monday at St. John's German Lutheran church in the country northeast of Goodhue over the remains of J. H. Diercks who passed away at the home of his son Kurt, on Thursday preceding, after an illness which might properly be called breaking down in advanced years. He was a man who had worked hard, having started out in the vigor of life with but little of this world's goods. He was born in Hanover, Germany, in 1838, and in 1864 was married to Miss Margaret Matthees. In 1873, during the fall, they came to America, and settled in the township of Goodhue, which, since that time, has been their home, Mrs. Diercks, surviving. To them were born ten children, seven of them are living, as follows: John P. of Milwaukee; Peter, Kurt and Henry of Goodhue; Mrs. Christ Vieths and Mrs. Nick Matthees of Goodhue; and Mrs. John Oelkers of Bellingham, Wash.
Deceased maintained a high standard of morality, and was looked up to by his fellow men as one worthy of all respect. Though a self-made man Mr. Diercks possessed a higher education so to speak, because of his work as a student of history, etc. He was by nature a mathematician, and what to most men seemed the next thing to an impossibility so far as solution was concerned, to him was no more than a simple problem. --Goodhue Enterprise January 1917

JOHN H. DIERCKS, AGED 78 YEARS, DIES AT HOME NEAR GOODHUE - FUNERAL ON MONDAY
John Hinrich Diercks, 78 years old, a resident of Goodhue County for 44 years, passed away at his home two miles north of Goodhue Village on Friday morning. He had been ailing for about a year.
The deceased was born at Hanover, Germany in 1838 and came to this country in 1872, settling in Goodhue County and had lived in this community since. He leaves to mourn the loss of a kind husband and father, his wife, four sons, Peter, Kurt, and Henry Diercks of Goodhue and John Diercks of Milwaukee and three daughters, Mrs. John Oelkers, Seattle, Wash., Mrs. Chris Veiths, and Mrs, Nicholas Matthees of Goodhue.

Johann Diercks was married twice. His first wife was named Margaretha Meinschien, and they were married on October 28, 1859 in Hannover, Germany. They had three children, but each were stillborn. Margaretha died just two days after giving birth to their last child, a baby girl. The baby died on January 16th, and Margaretha died on the 18th of January. Johann later married Margaretha Matthees on September 6, 1864 in Hannover, Germany. They had 10 children together.
