In September 1817, he moved to Illinois and lived on a farm 12 miles from St. Louis where the town of Centerville stands today. He taught school for a number of years. He was a member of the Christian Church founded by Dr. Alexander Campbell. In 1841 he was ordained to preach the Gospel.
