John Conrad Furches passed away March 31, 2010 at the Florida Lutheran Retirement center in DeLand, FL.

Born February 12, 1912 in Farmington, NC, he moved with his mother, Ada Conrad Furches, to Miami Beach, FL, in 1919 after the death of his father, Samuel Vance Furches.

He graduated from Ida M. Fisher High School in 1930 and attended Campbell College in Buies Creek, NC for one year. It was at Campbell College that he met his wife of 62 years, Lela Marie Warren (deceased). He worked in the grocery business, drove a Miami Beach bus for many years, and worked as a school custodian until his retirement in 1974, when he moved to DeLand, FL. He was a charter member of First Baptist Church, Miami, FL; was ordained as a deacon at Perrine Baptist Church, Perrine, FL; and served for many years at Riverside Baptist Church, Miami, FL and Stetson Baptist Church, DeLand, FL. At Stetson Baptist he was a nursing home volunteer; helped organize the church senior group, Young-at-Heart; and worked with Campers on Mission. He was a people person who above all else enjoyed helping others. His cheerful positive spirit will be missed by many friends and family members.

He is survived by daughter, Betty Kruhm (Jerry) New Smyrna, FL; son, John W. Furches (Sandy) Lake City, FL; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and family in North Carolina.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, April 2 at 1pm at DeLand Memorial Gardens, with a memorial service at 3pm at Allen-Summerhill Memorial Chapel in DeLand. The family will receive friends from 2-3pm. Reverend Larry Knowles will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be sent at Stetson Baptist Church, 1025 W. Minnesota Ave., DeLand, FL 32720. Allen-Summerhill Funeral Home DeLand is in charge.
