He was a graduate of Mars Hill College, Wake Forest University class of 1946 with a BA Degree and the Southern Baptist Seminary, Louisville, KY. Crate married the love of his life, Harriett Congleton on August 28, 1948. He was pastor of Rolesville Baptist Church from 1958 -1965. They moved to Durham in 1965 where Rev. Jones was pastor of Angier Avenue Baptist Church, until 1987. Rev. Jones served as an interim pastor for many churches in the area. He was a member of Cressent Baptist Church.
Rev. Jones authored several books and was a contributor of many letters to the editor of the Herald Sun Paper. He also was an accomplished artist and loved sharing his art with friends. He will be remembered for his love for God, his wife, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He had a great sense of humor and brought joy where ever he was. It can be said that he was truly a dedicated Christian.
Surviving are his two sons, Mark and Debbie Jones of Canton, GA and Russell and Lori Jones of Charlotte, NC; two daughters, Cathy and Dexter Wells of Angier, NC and Hannah and Mike Huskisson of Roswell, GA; seven grandchildren, Mark Hopkins, Daniel Hopkins, Valerie Russell, Taylor Jones, David Jones, Christopher Jones and Melanie Jones and three great-grandchildren, Addison Hopkins, Emma Grace Russell and Ethan Cooper.
He was predeceased by his wife, Harriett Congleton Jones in 2004.
