"JOHN G. BUCHANAN died Wednesday morning at 5:30 o'clock at his home, 1200 North Madison avenue, after an illness extending over about six years ... was born in Lennox, Ont., 67 years ago, and came to Michigan when 18 years of age working in the woods and following the lumber business for a number of years. In 1881 he became proprietor of the Moulton house at the corner of Saginaw street and Fourth avenue and continued there for seven years when he purchased the Brunswick house, then on the site of the present federal building ... Mr. Buchanan is survived by a widow and two sons, Albert G., of Flint, and Alex. of this city, besides two brothers, Daniel and Thomas, of North Dakota, and one sister, Mrs. A. J. Ross, of Saskatchewan, who was at the bedside with the rest of the family when dissolution took place. Mr. Buchanan was a charter member of Bay City lodge of Elks, and also a member of Joppa lodge, F. & A. M., and Bay City commandery, Knights Templar. The funeral will take place Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the residence under the auspices of the Knights Templar." (The Bay City Times Tribune, November 8, 1916]
