The son of Rebecca Clark, in 1860 he was a farmer living in Martic Township, Lancaster County. He stood 6' 1" tall and had light hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-one and mustered into federal service at Lancaster September 16, 1861, as a private with Co. H, 79th Pennsylvania Infantry. Wounded in the foot - which his compiled military service records do not reveal - at the battle of Perryville (Chaplin Hills) on October 8, 1862, the ball entering at the big toe and shattering bones. Hospitalized at Louisville, Kentucky, he is reported in a casualty list in the Lancaster Examiner as "supposed dead," an obviously erroneous report given that he discharged by surgeon's certificate to date April 14, 1863.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-four in Lancaster July 15, 1864, mustered into state service there July 19 as a sergeant with Hebble's Independent Cavalry Militia, and honorably discharged with the unit October 29, 1864.

He married Beatrice Warren ca. 1866 and fathered Milton E. (b. 10/20/68), Mary Estella (b. 12/22/70 - married Dr. J. F. Hartman), and Walter F. (b. 03/02/75). Cause of his death is listed as "valvular heart disease."
