Jerome Michael Burkart was born into eternal life on his 71st birthday, Sunday March 28th. As his fight with Lewy Body Dementia ended, he was surrounded in love by his family at his home in Phillips.

Jerome was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and spent his early years in Connersville. At the age of 6 he was adopted by Clemens and Lorraine Burkart and lived in Hewitt, Wisconsin.

He married Mary Tenut on August 11, 1963 in Phillips, Wisconsin at St. Patrick's Church. They resided in Milwaukee until 1966 when they moved to the northwoods because he felt that "Phillips is a beautiful little town."

Jerry and Mary had four children; Mary Lynn, Jerome Jr., Arthur, and Laurie. He will be remembered for his humor, generosity, courage, strength, loyalty and quick smile.

He will also be remembered by those who spent time working with him at Norco/Jeld Wen. He was a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners Local 1801. He took pride in his position of Union President and in "keeping management on their toes". He retired in 2002 after 26 years of service. His earlier occupations included railroad worker, highway construction, building construction, gas pipeline installation and metal salvage.

He is survived by his wife Mary; four children – Mary Lynn (Ed) Seybold of Wauwatosa, WI, Jerome Burkart, Jr. of Phillips, WI, Arthur (Tracie) Burkart of Phillips, WI, and Laurie (Chris) Polley of Dubuque, IA. Grandpa Jerry will be sadly missed by his grandchildren Caitlin, Tyler, Ian, and Brianna Seybold; Alanna Burkart; and Ryan and Jessica Polley.

He was preceded in death by his parents Clem and Lorraine Burkart; his brother Thomas; his foster parents Joe and Ruth Spatz, and his father in-law Arthur Tenut.

Visitation will be Tuesday, March 30 at the Heindl Funeral Home from 5pm-7pm with a prayer service at 7pm. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 31 at 3pm at St. Therese of Lisieux Catholic Church with Father Gerald Hagen officiating. Internment will follow at St. Patrick's Cemetary.

The Heindl Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
