Young Spalding with a companion was returning to his home at Loogootee from a short hunting trip in the afternoon; the former was walking in the rear when somehow his gun was accidentally discharged, the load of shot striking him in the eye and penetrating the brain. He fell to the ground and expired within a half hour without speaking or telling just how the shooting happened.

The deceased was the son of Mrs.G.L.Spalding, widow of the late Dr.G.L.Spalding who formerly lived in Knox coumty. He was the mainstay of his widowed mother and his death is an exceptionally sad one.
