William Hamilton Means was the son of Reverend William Carroll Means and Louisa Jane Baker Means.

On March 16, 1897 William married Lucy Mabel Reader in Greenwood County, Kansas. She was the daughter of George Reader and Zara Elizabeth Knibbs Reader Atchinson.

On March 29, 1908 William, Lucy, and their children George Earl, Hazel A, and Earnest L went to Gonzales, Tamaulipas, Mexico on a temp visa that was to expire July 6, 1909, for the purpose of ranching. The documentation at the Consulate's office stated that William was born in Montgomery County, Iowa and Lucy M. Reader Means in Grundy County, Illinois.

In 1918 when he registered for the WWI Draft, William was working for Apex Fish Company in a cannery in Anacortes. His wife Lucy M. was listed as his nearest relative.
