Lewis L. Miller, 73, 178 Shelley Ave, Marion died at 10:23 p.m. Saturday, February 15, 1992 at Marion General Hospital. Mr. Miller was born in Lacon, Illinois and had lived in Marion for 48 years.
He fought in the Pacific theater during World War II. He was drafted into the army in 1940 (prior to the outbreak of the war in 1941) and completed basic training in Fort Wolters Texas. He became part of the historic jungle fighters known as the Bushmasters, and completed additional jungle combat training in Panama. From Panama he was sent to Brisbane, Australia. From Australia he was engaged in combat in the jungles of New Guinea, especially in the Port Moresby area. He was promoted to sergeant while in the service. Lewis became extremely ill with malaria and dengue fever in New Guinea and was sent home in March of 1945 after losing over 1/3 of his body weight.
After returning to the United States at the end of the war, he married and became the father of 4 children. In the 1950s he started Miller's TV and Sales. He was one of the first to sell this new entertainment option. Later he became an insurance agent and then opened his own agency. He worked as an insurance agent for 27 years at Miller's Insurance Agency, where he was the former owner and founder.
He was a member of Temple Congregational Church, McCulloch Lodge, No. 737 F&AM, VFW Post 6728, Gas City, Phi Delta Kappa, American Legion Post 95, Jonesboro and the Moose Lodge, Gas City.
Lewis overcame poverty and childhood abuse to become a sucessful businessman, and most importantly, an excellent role model. He decided early on that his children would not suffer the same abusive childhood that he and his brothers endured. Instead, he was a gentle, kind and supportive father who said his greatest goal was to raise happy children. He is still missed by all of those who knew him and loved him.
