He was a farmer; son of John Short & Hannah Ogle; married to Millie Jane Peck, Lydia White, and Betty Casey; moved his family to Swords Creek, Russell County, Virginia in the 1880's, then moved to Monroe County, West Virginia in 1900
He was a member of The New Garden Fearnots of Russell Co. Va that became Co I 37th Va CSA.
The following is quoted directly from the book "37th Virginia Infantry" by Thomas M. Rankin.
Short, William: Pvt., Co. I. Enl. 5/2/61 at New Garden. Present sick at Monterey7-8/61. Present1-2/62. Court-martialed for desertion on march from Franklin to Stribling Springs 5/12/62, sentenced to forfeit 4 mos. pay and public reprimand at parade. Present 5-8/62. wnded 8/9/62 Cedar Mtn. On wnded furl. 9-10/62.

Obituary of William Short
William Short Mr. William Short died at the home of his son, Mr. Marion C. Short, near Knobs postoffice, this county, on Sunday evening last, Feb. 11, 1912, after a protracted illness, of heart disease and kidney trouble. He was unconscious for several days presecing his death. Mr. Short was a native of Buchanan Co., Va., but had been residing here with his son for about a year. His age was 67 years, 1 month, and 20 days. He was a brave and dutiful Confederate soldier, serving in the 37th Virginia Infantry and Stonewall Brigade. Mr. Short was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church. During his residence in this county he made a number of friends, his life proving his merits as a staunch, kindly and upright man. The deceased was twice married, his second wife being Miss Betsy Coxe of Buchanan county. Both his wives preceded him to the grave years ago. Surviving him are three sons, Messrs Marion C. of this county, Perry Short of Giles Co., Va., and a third residing in Buchanan county. The remains of the loyal old veteran were interred in the graveyard on Mr. Julian Mutter's place on the Knobs last Tuesday, Rev. J. M. Ashworth conducting the funeral service in the presence of a large gathering.
