James was the son of John Bullen and Mary Ann Speck, both of whom were born in England and emigrated to Canada. James emigrated to the U.S. from Canada in 1875 with his parents. By the time of the 1880 census, the family had settled in Caro, Tuscola County, Michigan, where James's father was a pork butcher as he had been in Canada.

James followed in his father's footsteps and became a butcher.

He married Mary Genevieve "Mayme" Keiff, daughter of Augustus Keiff and Emma Jane Peck, in Caro, Tuscola County, Michigan on April 21, 1897. They had three children:

1) Evelyn A. Bullen (1900-1980), whose first husband was a Mr. Lovett, and whose second huband was Arthur A. Peterson;
2) Carolyn "Patsy" Bullen (1902-2000), who married Raymond Victor Marshall;
3) John Augustus Bullen, (1905-1980), who married Eleanor Kay Ramlow.

In the 1920s James had his own butcher shop in Ward 4 of Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan. By 1930 he had returned to Flint, Genesee County, Michigan where he had lived briefly prior to his move to Detroit.

James lived in Flint for 25 years, was a member of the Flint Lodge F&AM, Bay City Consistory, and Genesee Valley Commandery. He was also employed at Hamady Brothers for 25 years.

Obituary:

BULLEN – James W. Bullen, 709 Grand Traverse St., age 71, died Friday, June 18, 1943, at Hurley Hospital. Funeral services will be held 3 P.M., Saturday, June 19, 1943, from the Rose Chapel Algoe-Gundry Mortuary, Dr. Ralph D. Kearns officiating. Burial in Sunset Hills Mausoleum. Body will be at the Mortuary.

He was born in Owen Sound, Canada, Feb. 13, 1872, and had lived in Flint for 25 years. He was a member of the Flint Lodge F & A. M., Bay City Consistory, and Genesee Valley Commandery. He was employed at Hamady Bros. for 25 years.

Surviving are: Wife; two daughters, Mrs. A.[Arthur] A. Peterson of Detroit and Mrs. R.V. Marshall of Flint; one son, John A. Bullen of Flint; one sister, Mrs. Ed Streeter of Caro, Mich.; four grandchildren.
