Mary Smith Whitener, 69, of 112 Middlebrook Rd., Greer, died unexpectedly Friday, March 26, 2010 at her residence.

Born in Newton, NC, she was a daughter of the late Fred and Pearl Welch Smith. Prior to her retirement, she worked as a substitute teacher in the Greenville County School District for 32 years. Mrs. Whitener was a member of Lee Road Baptist Church, where she was President of the Missions Group and active in Sunday School. She was a dedicated mother, grandmother and servant to the community and her church.

Surviving are her husband of 45 years, F. Gene Whitener; daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Joseph Tucker of Moore; son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Nikki Whitener of Easley; four grandchildren, Waverly Tucker, Abbey, Maddie and Mitchell Whitener; three brothers, Glenn and Jimmy Smith, both of Newton, NC, and Donald Smith of Millbrook, AL; and two sisters, Rachel Heavner of Newton, NC, and Deanie Isenhour of Las Vegas, NV. She was preceded in death by one sister, Jenny Smith.

The Funeral Service will be held Monday at 3:00 pm at Lee Road Baptist Church, with visitation prior from 1:00 pm – 2:45 pm. Burial to follow the service in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
