SUCCUMBED TO ALCOHOLISM IN OFFICE YESTERDAY.
DES MOINES PIONEER LAWYER
HE HAD PRACTICED LAW HERE SINCE ABOUT 1860.
Lived Alone and Was Rather Eccentric?Has Son in Minneapolis Who Will Take Charge of Body.
Peter F. Bartle, one of the oldest law practitioners in Polk county, aged 65 years, was found dead yesterday afternoon in his office in the Exchange block. Physicians believe his death due to excessive alcoholism.
Mr. Bartle is believed to have engaged in the practice of law in Des Moines soon after the year 1860. He was considered rather an eccentric character and although fairly well educated in the law, had not attained any prominence in practice. He was a widower and had one son, whose home is in Minneapolis. He was notified last night of the death of his father and is expected to arrive in Des Moines this evening to take charge of the remains.
A coroner's jury was impaneled by Dr. J. W. Beck, which will sit on the remains this afternoon to render a verdict on the manner of Mr. Bartle's death.
In addition to his practice of the law, Mr. Bartle was absorbed in the study of astronomy. In this science he attained much knowledge and was regarded as an authority on the law and calculation of astronomical movement and phenomena.
