Vernon was the second of five children born to Vernon Jones and Walda Sophia (Johnson) Herrick. His sister Rosemary June passed away at 4 mos of age before Vernon was born. Vernon's own twin, Paul, was stillborn. The 4th child was Vernon's brother Raymond Floyd, and lastly a baby brother, unnamed and stillborn. Vernon married Norma Fern Nash in 1939, and they had 5 daughters. He was a private in the US Army. Vernon died at the age of 69.
