Mrs. Mary J. Murie Dies Last Monday
Long-Time Resident Of Lafayette Passes Away At Portland, Oregon
On last Monday, May 31, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ivan F. Preese in Portland, Oregon, occurred the death of Mrs. Mary Jane Murie, who for 40 years was a resident of Lafayette and vicinity. Death followed an illness of two months' duration and although she received all the care that a devoted daughter could give her she gradually sank away and passed to the great beyond.
Mary J. Clinger was born in Heber, Utah, June 8, 1852. when nine years of age she moved with her parents to Columbus, Nebraska, making the trip in an oxcart, as was the customary mode of travel in those days. August 5, 1873, she was united in marriage at Columbus to Peter Murie, who preceded her in death on May 24, 1924. In 1877 Mr. and Mrs. Murie came to Colorado and for 49 years were residents of Lafayette and Erie. In December, 1924, Mrs. Murie went to Portland, where she has since made her home with her daughter.
In early life Mrs. Murie became a member of the church of the Latter Day Saints and remained a faithful member of this church until her death. She was ever a devoted wife and mother and her every thought was for the comfort and happiness of her family. She was also noted for her kindness and helpfulness to her neighbors and friends and not only in the family circle but among hosts of friends and acquaintances will she be missed.
Surviving her are eight children. They are: Albert P., of Roundup, Montana; Willard and Mrs. Preese of Portland; Mrs. Louis Laffea, of Roundup, Montana; John, of Serene; Walter, of Denver; George, of Lafayette, and Clarence, of El Centro, California.
The body will be brought to Lafayette, arriving here this evening, and funeral services will be held at the home of her son George in this city next Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock. Burial will be made in the Lafayette cemetery."
