James Matthew "Matt" Hammonds, age 36, resident of Calhoun, TN, passed away Tuesday, March 2, 2010, in a local hospital. He was a member of the Calhoun First Baptist Church. He was the head coach of the D3 Stingers Baseball Team. He was an avid baseball fan and played baseball for Charleston High School and Cleveland State Community College. He was a loving husband, father and son. He was an All Star baseball player at Charleston High School and an All Star Dad and Husband.
He is survived by his wife, Mandi Hammonds, Calhoun, TN; one son, Logan Cross Hammonds and one daughter, Lyndsey Cross Hammonds; parents, Jim and Kay Hammonds, Cleveland, TN; mother in law and father in law, Jeff and Angela Long, Calhoun, TN; one brother in law, Jeffrey Long, Calhoun, TN. A host of friends and extended family.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 6, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at Calhoun First Baptist Church with Rev. Kevin Cheatam officiating. Interment will follow in Calhoun Cemetery with Robert Harbison, Jimmy Hill, Stacey Smith, Joe Shamblin, Steven Shelton and Denny Norman serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be John Gamble, Scott McGowan, Jeffey Long and the D3 Stingers baseball team.
In lieu of flowers, please make memorials to the Matt Hammonds Baseball Scholarship Fund c/o Walker Valley High School 85 C Mouse Creek Road Cleveland, TN 37312.
The family will receive friends Friday, March 5, 2010, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Grissom Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church.
