Son of:
John B. Newton & Sarah L.A. Bickham Newton of Caddo Parish, Louisiana. John B. Newton was educated at McKenzie College, Red River County, Texas and was teaching in Marshall Texas, studying law, before the Civil War. In May of 1861 he went to Dallas and joined the Third Cavalry, Co. A. John B. Newton became Captain J.B. Newton, C.S.A. on the staff of Gen. J. W. Whitfield and Gen. Ross, serving until the close of the war. In 1867, he came to Caddo Parish from Texas. John B. Newton was a son of Robert and Rhoda Byrns Newton both born in S.C. John was born Feb. 1, 1833 in Robertson County, TN. In 1868 John married Sarah L. A. Bickham, the mother of his eight children. Sarah was the daughter of Benjamin Ramsey Bickham and Margaret Ann Daniel Bickham. Sarah was born in Caddo Parish in 1850 and died in Shreveport, Caddo, in 1940.
Robert was the oldest of their children. Robert married Miss Sudie Compton in Caddo Parish in 1890. Robert's brothers and sisters were: Maude, John and May(twins), Alph, Wilkes, Wave, and Frank Newton. Robert and Sudie lived most of their married life in Texas. Both Robert and Sudie, passed away in Laredo, Webb County, Texas. One daughter, Mozelle, married and lived in San Antonio. Sudie and John had other children, but their names are unknown to me.
Robert's sister, Miss May Newton was a teacher and educator in Caddo Parish for many years. She was the principal of a friend of mine, Mrs. Martha Minson, when Martha taught in Shreveport, LA. My cousin, J. Frank McAneny, attended the same elementary school as a child. Miss May was a friend of my grandmother's, Alice Compton Smith, as well as being her sister's sister-in-law.
