Helen D. Lehman, 84, of Summerville, S.C., formerly of Portersville, died Tuesday at Lake Moultrie Nursing Center, St. Stephens, S.C. Born April 1, 1916, in Portersville, she was the daughter of Edwin and Frances T. Moore Alben.

Mrs. Lehman was a former member of the Presbyterian Church of Portersville. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ronald (Marjorie) Weitzel of Jonesboro, Ga., and Susan Lehman Gillgrist of Summerville; and three sons, William D. Lehman of Harmony, Wayne T. Lehman of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Ronald D. Lehman of Lyndora. Also surviving are 21 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren Her husband, Robert Joseph Lehman Sr., died Feb. 6, 1993. A son also preceded her in death.

When I look at her I remember how hard she worked...pumped the water, heated it on a burner, pored into wringer washer, washed clothes for 6 kids, hung them either outside or in the basement and then the next day ironed them all. Our jeans had seams ironed down the front. And I complain about laundry....we live such spoiled lives...
