Winfield Scott Van Etten, a well known farmer and resident of Bath Township, son of Jacob and Ruth Jane Van Etten, was born near Bath, Illinois, February 1, 1861 and departed this life at his home south of Bath, Illinois, July 10, 1921, aged sixty years, five months and nine days.
His boyhood was spent in Bath Township and the remainder of his life in the adjacent community, living at his farm home for the pasttwenty eight years.
He was the youngest of a family of six children, three of whom preceded him in death. Of these a brother, Andrew, and a sister,Alice, died in youth and another sister, Mrs. M. L. Sisson, three years ago. Of this family he is survived by a brother, H. M. VanEtten, and a sister, Mrs.
Melinda Houston of Bath.
On October 20, 1885 he was united in marriage to Mary Wortman who has been to him a most faithful companion all these years. To this union were born four children, two sons, Franklin and Harold and two daughters, Mrs. Ernest Clark of near Kilbourne and Miss Agnes at home. He is survived by these children, his wife, four grandchildren as well as by a host of their relatives and friends.
Mr. Van Etten was an active member of the Modern Woodman Royal Neighbors and Order of Knights and Ladies of Security. He also belonged to the Bath Old School Mates Association. He united with the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in 1887 under the ministry of Rev. Jones.
He was in failing health for the last two years and about six weeks ago was stricken with paralysis from which he never rallied. His condition becoming worse each succeeding day till death came as a relief from suffering. He was always a kind and loving husband and father, considerate of the welfare and comfort of his family. He was ever cheerful and courageous even during the most
trying moments of his illness.
Funeral services were held at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church near Kilbourne conducted by the Rev. George Boyd of Virginia after which the body was taken to Bath Cemetery for interment.
