BRIEF HISTORY OF THE LIFE OF
MELVA PENROD DAVIS (PENROD FAMILY HISTORY, VOLUME I 1970)

I was born Oct. 6, 1901 to Amasa L. and Hannah R. Wright Penrod at 12 North and Canyon Road.

Our home was beautiful to me, so much love, with strict supervision. I remember when Verl was born, I could look but not touch. He was in a home made cradle, usually close to Mother. What joy when Mother let me hold him.

Dad was building two back rooms on to the house. What fun Dean and I had playing in them. I'm sure Dad could have shook us as we were always in the way.

There was lawn all around our home, and the pie cherry trees lined the road on the east. To the south there were three pear trees, two lilac and in front of those was Dad's garden. It was an orchard of apple and plum trees, and when they were in bloom it was a fairyland. To the north were currants and all kinds of berries, also Dad's barn and animals. There was a place for everything and everything was in its place.

Mother was a wonderful seamstress, could make anything without a pattern. She always made me clothes from my sisters and kept my hair curled with a big bow in it. Mother was always helping someone. She was never too busy to listen to our troubles, and I never heard her say an unkind word about anyone. She would say to me, if you can't say something nice keep quite.

Across the street from us lived the Poulsens. He had a water wheel in the creek that ran past and he also had a molasses mill and many times Mother made molasses candy and let us pull it.

I remember the time Dean and I went over to ask Mr. Poulsen if we could have some apples. We had plenty of apples at home, but his seemed to taste better. He said we could pick some from the ground, but after he left, Dean climbed the tree and shook it and I picked them up in my apron. Well he has a salt and pepper gun and he started to chase us. My father was standing on the back steps. he said, give it to them, and he meant it.

I went to the Page School and my favorite teachers were Charles Peterson and Mamie Alexander.

I went to live with Mima and Miles Davis when I started working in town. They were sure good to me. I had to report to them when I went out at night and tell them when I was home.

I met my husband Bill while living with them. We were married and traveled all over, finally settled in California and there is where my son William P. Davis was born. We moved back to Salt Lake when Billy was two years old and have lived here ever since.

Billy attended the Oquirrh grade school, the Bryant Jr. High, the West High, and graduated from the University of Utah June 1961.

Bill and myself were married in the Salt Lake Temple August 14, 1956.

We have three wonderful grandchildren -- Wendy, 8; Mark 6 1/2; and Suzanne nearly 2 years old.
